A Misty Dawn with Great Crested Grebes on Lake Kerkini | Wildlife Photography & Filming
Dear Friends,
Only a couple of days now before I set off back to the UK with the two pups so I thought I would go down to the lakeside to see what I might find and in the hope of recording some Great Crested Grebes courtship.
Not entirely successful but not a failure either and a lovely misty morning spent filming birds can't be bad.!
Hope you enjoy, and until next time...
thanks for watching..!

      Hi Alberto and thank you for your question. I have not used any Leica lenses so I can’t really say how you might overcome the issue you mention.. I’m also not sure which 200mm lens you are talking about. I did find this article/review on a Leica 200mm but I’m not sure if this is your Lens and here it does talk about manual focus. Perhaps there is a Leica forum you can ask about manual focussing on this lens.? www.cameralabs.com/panasonic-leica-dg-200mm-f2-8-h-es200-review/

    Why don't you film with 30/60/120/180 FPS - for wildlife? It would give you more flexibility to slow down, and 30 vs 25 FPS makes a movement more fluid. Is there a special reason for having chosen 50/100/200? Here in Europe you will you will not encounter the flickering problems with artificial light sources, because you film outdoors.

    • @GeorgeSBlonsky
      @GeorgeSBlonsky 9 дней назад

      Thanks for the question Markus and what you say is quite true especially about the flicker issue.. I guess it’s because of habit.. all the productions I have worked on are European and they just have it is default setting requirements and I continue to shoot like that for myself and for the agencies I give to. I also shoot doc style interviews though I don’t cover any of that on my channel which do have lighting so it’s also just my own default settings on the camera and I don’t have to think about switching.

    Hi again G, I've been watching videos on your channel this morning and are really enjoying but I was wondering if you ever record the sounds of the environment and if so where's your mic as I haven't seen a video with it on yet and as sound are so important would your advice be stock libraries if say the lake is in town and my mic pickup people talking cars and off course plains or just the right relaxing kind of music. Also what percentage would you say you pan with action or do mostly film a static frame letting the birds enter and exit from the frame and as the final film is often filmed over several days is it a problem if its sunny in some and overrated in others, what advice can you give on that. thx a mil Doug

    • @GeorgeSBlonsky
      @GeorgeSBlonsky Месяц назад

      No worries Doug... taking your questions one by one: Sound - unfortunately there is a lot of unwanted ambient noise these days because even though we are filming & photographing wildlife in "wilderness" areas some man made sounds still do occur, be it cars, trains, tractors, boats etc... so I do use a lot of soundscape from stock libraries. If filming for myself I do also record on and off camera sound if I will need to use very specific sounds to the scene but I also use a lot of music overlayed. When filming for a production I normally shoot "silent" and the production team's sound team takes care of the sound from library. Panning vs Static Shots - to be honest I couldn't guess a percentage but I shoot a lot of both depending on the story I'm telling and how the action/behaviour unfolds... for some stories (especially small birds.!) panning is almost impossible because of the speed of the subject. Matching shots - it is quite important when showing a particular instance/event ie.. editing a single sequence in part of a story. In this case for example, a sequence showing the storks hunting in the rain but then feeding their chicks in the sunshine could be problematic but you could work around it by cutting in some B-roll between the shots showing weather moving in or something else tying them together. If it's a different chapter of the story then it doesn't really matter if the weather/light is different between the two shots... so a shot of the pair mating can have different light/weather conditions to a shot later in the story of them feeding the chicks. Hope that makes some sense.? all the best, g

    when shooting at 50fps or more, the 180deg shutter rule is not that essential, even for slowed down footage you can get away with a 1/200 or more

    • @GeorgeSBlonsky
      @GeorgeSBlonsky Месяц назад

      My opinion is that whilst it may not be "essential" and I'm sure you probably can get away with shooting at 1/200 or more like you say when shooting at higher frame rates... but the fact is utilising the 180 degree shutter rule will without question produce a nicer and more "filmic" result.

    Thanks for sharing! When filming with this lens, do you find that the tripod balance gets off when the lens is extended ?

    • @GeorgeSBlonsky
      @GeorgeSBlonsky Месяц назад

      that is one of the hardest things with lenses that don't zoom internally like this one. I have found though that balancing it when zoomed half way out gives me the best all round balance I can achieve.. it's not perfect by any means but it is workable.

    Thanks very much for the video and the tips. In my last video I posted I filmed wild bears and probably it would look a lot worst if I didn't watch this video 😁. It didn't turned out amazing... but for a first time I think is ok. I tried auto focus but it wouldn't do for me so I filmed 99% in manual focus. Next one I hope it will be better. I know this video is "old", but I recently found your channel and you are the most pragmatic instuctor I've seen. Your ability to simplify things, instead of only focusing on techinical matters is remarkable. If you don't know where the birds are or what they are going to do, it does not matter how good your gear is.

    Hi George, greetings from Colombia! I love your videos and have learned a lot. In this case I have a question, besides RUclips, what do you do with all this beautiful footage? If it's not an assignment for BBC or NatGeo, etc. what is the end goal, do you sell it for stock?

    • @GeorgeSBlonsky
      @GeorgeSBlonsky Месяц назад

      Thanks so much Nicolas.! Depends on the footage.. if it’s generic then I give it to stock.. if it’s a complete sequence/story and a good one then I reach out to my contacts in the production companies to see if it matches any projects they might be working on.. if not then I keep my own archive to sell myself because the agencies give peanuts.. hope that helps.? All the best to you.. g

      Thanks for your kind reply George! If you don’t mind, I have a question: The Sigma 60-600 you use is a brilliant lens for the money and I’m seriously considering investing in one, but I was wondering how you handle the need for ND filters when trying to keep wildlife action looking natural at 25fps? The filter thread is a whopping 105mm! Do you use a VND? I have the same BMPCC 6K as yours, which unfortunately doesn’t have the built-in NDs. Any advice you could share about this and the 60-600 would be great. 👍

    • @GeorgeSBlonsky
      @GeorgeSBlonsky Месяц назад

      Thanks Chris and no problem at all.. feel free to ask away..! I do use a screw on VND when I have no choice but I’m not entirely happy with it.. I think because of its size if you go too far you can get vignetting and X shadows.. I’m looking at getting a matte box but it’s quite expensive, takes longer to set up, more to carry etc..etc.. for the most part I shoot early and late so I’ve been able to get away without using it

    • @chrisso1973
      @chrisso1973 Месяц назад

      Hey George, I appreciate you getting back. It’s helpful to hear how you use time of day and lighting conditions to optimise your use of the Sigma 60-600 without an ND-makes sense. I note for your equipment list online that you have mostly Canon L lenses and was wondering how you’d compare image quality of your big Sigma to the Canons? I’m in a quandary as I’m weighing up whether to get the Sigma 60-600 or a Canon 100-400 OS ii for my BMPCC 6K. I could probably forego the extra reach if image quality is better, plus I already have 77mm NDs that would fit the Canon (a saving of hundreds if it means I don’t have to buy new ones to fit the Sigma). What would you do? 😊👍

    That first slow pan from the boat to the distant mountains was superb. It really set the scene for all the footage that followed. What a wonderful place. The sounds of nature is simply magical. Bright sun can be a pain...the old dark focussing cloth we used would be just the ticket for that job. 😊 I have been editing my comment as I've watched the video and now having seen it through to the end I reckon that completed edit at the end is one of your best. As always it is great to see the time and effort it takes to get what is often a very short clip. The majority of viewers who may watch the final film will have no idea of the planning and effort that goes into quality wildlife filming. Best wishes.
